High School Students Explore Future Communication Technologies Through 6GEM+ Demonstrations
As part of the outreach programmes “Schüler*innenuni Elektrotechnik und Informationstechnik 2026” at RWTH Aachen University and the “SchülerUni 2026” at TU Dortmund University, groups of high school students visited the Chair for Digital Signal Processing (RWTH Aachen) and the Chair of Communication Networks (TU Dortmund) to gain first-hand insights into electrical engineering, information technology, and cutting-edge research. Both events provided participants with an opportunity to explore how emerging communication technologies and intelligent systems are shaping the future.
During the visits, students took part in interactive hands-on demonstrations, where they discovered how communication systems, sensing technologies, and AI computing work together in applications such as industrial robotics and intelligent mobility. Through practical experiments and live demonstrations, the students gained a deeper understanding of the interdisciplinary technologies that enable modern connected systems.
The demonstrations at both locations featured research developed within the 6GEM+ and GEM-X projects, highlighting current advances in next-generation communication networks, integrated sensing, and AI-enabled distributed intelligence. By showcasing real research prototypes and application scenarios, the events illustrated how these projects are contributing to the development of future 6G technologies and intelligent networked systems.
Both formats aimed to inspire the next generation of engineers and researchers by providing an engaging introduction to electrical engineering and information technology. Through direct interaction with researchers and hands-on experiences, participants were able to experience how scientific research is translated into practical innovations with real-world impact.
